Most people in the US, and in much of the West, are aware of totalitarian government tactics only if they know their world history or have elderly relatives who were there in WW2 or in the Communist revolutions of China, the USSR, Cambodia, etc. Their personal experience with totalitarian tactics is usually zero – which means it’s the last thing for people in a historical democracy to expect.

Biderman’s Chart of Coercion
The Biderman’s Chart of Coercion is a list of methods that the Chinese and Korean military used to torture US prisoners of war in the Korean War. However, it’s a completely universal list that isn’t limited by time or country, as Amnesty International points out. This chart was used at Guantanamo Bay and it has also been compared to the methods that domestic abusers use on their victims.
